6 things to do in York this weekend


Only two more weekends 'til Halloween! Are you ready?

This weekend, you can see a Halloween parade, watch a murder mystery and see a free showing of "The Goonies." Or, if you're not into the spooky season, catch a local concert or comedy show.

Here are six fun ways to spend the weekend. 

Go to a comedy show

Former truck driver and motorcyclist Julie Scoggins takes the mic Thursday night as the second comedian to perform in the Strand-Capitol’s new CapComedy series. She’ll have you laughing ‘til you cry as she delivers her blue-collar comedy style at 7:30 p.m. at York’s Capitol Theatre.

Tickets are $15. A bar and concessions will be available.

See a show at The Strand

On Thursday night, the internationally renowned Hypnotic Brass Ensemble takes the stage at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center with members of the Susquehannock High School Marching Band. Together, they’ll perform Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s hit song “War,” which was featured in “The Hunger Games.” The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Also at the Strand Theatre, Arlo Guthrie will perform on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $45.

Hear live music

Chicago-based alternative bluegrass folk singer Robbie Fulks is returning to his hometown for a concert this weekend. His Thursday night Kable House show inside York’s Central Market House will be the first time he’s been to the city since he was a child.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Food and beverages will also be available.

See 'Postmortem,' a murder mystery

It’s April 1922, and the cast of William Gillette’s latest Broadway revival of “Sherlock Holmes” has arrived at his medieval castle for a séance. But things take a turn when Gillette, who’s known for his 30-year portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, suspects one of his guests is trying to murder him. See if you can solve the case Sherlock Holmes-style along with Gillette in this murder mystery thriller on stage at The Belmont Theatre.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

See ‘The Twilight Zone’ on stage

Watch as your favorite episodes from “The Twilight Zone” come to life on stage at Dallastown Area High School. The Dallastown Performing Arts Club will present four student-crafted adaptations of episodes, including “The Lonely,” “Eye of the Beholder,” “5 Characters in Search of an Exit” and “Will the Real Martian Please Step Forward,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Monday.

Tickets are $5-$7.

More family fun

Kick off your weekend with the Dallastown Halloween parade at 7 p.m. Thursday. It steps off from Dallastown High School and travels down South Walnut Street, Main Street and South Pleasant Avenue before returning back to the school.

Then, dress your kids in their best Halloween costume and bring them to Central Market House on Saturday for a tea party, music and games with the Red Queen and Alice in Wonderland. Two seatings are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and noon.

Then, end your weekend with a movie. A free showing of “The Goonies” is scheduled for dusk on Saturday at Lehr Park in Dover. The rain location is inside the Community Building.
