Out and about in Lebanon County: Get your treasures' value, visit the Boardwalk or try out for chorale


A fun and refreshing water park, a local carnival, plenty of music at lots of different venues, even discovering what your treasured heirlooms are worth - there's so much to do, you might want to make a list.

9 A.M., SATURDAY, MAY 30 >> Want to find out what that treasured family heirloom is really worth? An Antiques Appraisal Fair will be hosted by the Mt. Gretna Area Historical Society this Saturday, from 9 a.m. until noon, in the Mt. Gretna Fire Company Social Hall on Boulevard Street in Mt. Gretna.

Terry Breidenstine, owner of All-County Jewelry, Coins and Antiques in Lebanon, will provide the appraisals. Folks may bring up to five items to the event, and will be charged $5 per appraisal. All proceeds will benefit the Mt. Gretna Area Historical Society. The appraisal fair is open to the public. For more information, call Susan Hostetter at (717) 964-1956.

10 A.M. SATURDAY >> Haul your swimming suit out of dry-dock and head for the Boardwalk at Hersheypark! This Jersey-shore-themed water park is just the thing for hot and humid days, and lots of fun for the kids. The Boardwalk will be open until 6 p.m.

7 P.M. FRIDAY >> Legends Cafe, 9 South Ninth St., will be hosting "Damaskus Road," one of the finest Christian rock bands in the region. They'll be on stage until 9 p.m. For more information, call (&17) 273-7700.

7 P.M. SATURDAY >> The Rockets will be playing at Legends Cafe, until 9 p.m. Legends Cafe is open Thursday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Good food, good music, good friends.

9 A.M. SATURDAY >> Auditions will be held for the Educational Outreach Program choirs, the Susquehanna Youth Choir, Young Women's and Children's Chorales for the 2015-2016 season for the Susquehanna Chorale, it was announced by Conductor Linda L. Tedford. Auditions are by appointment. They will be held Saturday until noon, and on Tuesday, June 2 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

6:30 P.M., MONDAY, JUNE 1 >> Auditions for the 2015-2016 season of the Susquehanna Chorale will be held in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 212 Cocoa Avenue, Hershey until 9 p.m.

On Monday, June 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., auditions will be held in the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Simpson St., Mechanicsburg.

5 P.M., FRIDAY, JUNE 5 >> An opening reception will be held in the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery, North White Oak and Church streets, at Lebanon Valley College for the 44th Annual Juried Art Exhibition. Friday evening, the reception will last until 7 p.m. Hours of the gallery are Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 1 to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments may be made for groups. 5:30 P.M. FRIDAY, JUNE 5 >> Jazz vocalist Nicole Roberts, daughter of Tap and Andy Roberts of Mt. Gretna, is scheduled to sing with the Lebanon Big Swing Band this summer concert season, beginning with the Good Samaritan Hospital Street Fair Concert to be held Friday, June 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The concert is free and open to the public.

10 A.M. SATURDAY, JUNE 6 >> The Conrad Weiser Homestead will be open until 4 p.m. this day, with a special "Edge of the Woods" ceremony taking place at 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m. The Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead are sponsoring this event which mirrors an old Native American custom involving a preliminary meeting before any treaty negotiations can begin. Other activities will showcase a working 18th century farm. On Sunday, June 7, the homestead will hold its annual Colonial Craft and Demonstration Day.

The Homestead is located at 28 Weiser Drive, next to Route 422, Womelsdorf.

6 P.M. SATURDAY, JUNE 6 >> The Reinholds Fire Company presents their 2015 Country Music Show on the Reinholds carnival grounds, three miles west of Route 272. The kitchen opens at 4 p.m., and entertainment begins at 6 p.m. The rock band "Reckless" and Richie Fields will be the night's entertainment. Free parking. Admission ages 16 and up is $8; 15 and under is free. For more information, go to: www.reinholdsfireco.com.

1:30 P.M. SUNDAY, JUNE 7 >> "Tabor and the Community: A History," will be presented in the Lebanon County Historical Society's auditorium by Gregory N. Keller Jr., Tabor Church historian. Keller is well-versed in the long and prestigious history of the Lebanon church. For example, Dr. John Conrad Bucher, pastor of the Tabor Church from 1768 to 1780, died while performing a wedding ceremony in Annville. His congregation, bereft by their loss, refused to let him be placed on a cart and instead, carried their beloved pastor the six miles back to Tabor.

Keller has lots more to say about this historic church and its interesting past. The event is free and open to the public.

9 A.M. SATURDAY, JUNE 13 >> Historic Old Annville Day will commence, lasting until 2 p.m. The annual event features vendors, activities for children, arts and crafts, plenty of food, and music performances. Musical groups will convene at a stage adjacent to Soprano's Italian Restaurant along Main Street, and include the Quittapahilla Highlander bagpipes, Annville's own Washington Band, Lee Moyer's "Great American Songbook," and Celtic music and dance. 2 p.m., Saturday, June 13 >> The Reading Railroad Heritage Museum will host another Reading Arts in Local-motion (RAiL) event, called "Rails Go Bragh!," an outdoor multi-arts celebration of the Irish workers of the Reading Railroad. Gates open at 2 p.m., with entertainment from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will take place at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum at 500 South Third Street, Hamburg. Admission is $10 for adults, free for children under 16.

The immigrant Irish workers were among the first to be hired when the predecessor of the Reading Railroad, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, began in the late 1830s. Their working conditions were hard, dangerous and undervalued. This event celebrates their contributions to the history of the Reading Railroad.

The bands "Irish Mist" and "Shanachians" will be performing, as will Keegan Loesell on uilleann pipes, and Aislinn Loesell, an Irish dancer. Larry Roeder will relate stories of the Irish rail workers and Irish dancers from the Broesler School of Irish Dance will perform. A miniature hand-powered Munchkin Railroad will be in operation for children.

5:30 P.M., SATURDAY, JUNE 20 >> The Lebanon County Historical Society, in conjunction with the World War II Historical Association Inc., will hold a variety of events this evening on the grounds of Union Canal Tunnel Park, including a World War II era dinner and a dance fund-raiser. The evening will begin with a flag dedication ceremony, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and will honor the late Mr. Robert A. Heilman, former president of the Lebanon County Historical Society. Heilman served in World War II as a member of the Quartermaster Corps. He also played piano for the Lebanon High School "Swingmasters."

A barbecue dinner will be held, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., with the meal provided by Hresko's Bar-B-Que Pit. Then, a dance will be held under a tent from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with music provided by the "Big, Big Band of Lancaster."

Tickets for the dinner and dance are $40, and for the dance only, are $20. Please stop by the Society's office to purchase tickets.
