Out and About in Lebanon: Experience Broadway locally or a classic car show this weekend


LEBANON >> Want to experience a local Broadway production, check out some classic cars, or visit a historic one-room school? 10 A.M. FRIDAY >> Comedian Dave Chappelle will be appearing at the Hershey Theatre on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., and due to popular demand, will add a second show at 9:30 p.m. that evening. 10 A.M. FRIDAY >> This is the start of a three-day weekend of fun and flight at the Grimes Airfield in Bethel. Hosted by the Golden Age Air Museum, this is a "Radio-Control Model Meet and Airshow, " featuring designs from the pre-1941 era. A model flea market will also be on the grounds. Admission is $7 for adults; $4 for ages 6 - 12; and 5 and under are free.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, a full scale aircraft flight demonstration will take place.

10 A.M. FRIDAY >> When do teenagers and opera go together? When they combine to create the hit trio, "Il Volo." This Italian teen pop opera trio will take the stage at the Hershey Theatre on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday morning. NOON, FRIDAY >> The historic Lindley Murray one-room schoolhouse is open to the public Friday though Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. this weekend and the last weekend in August. The schoolhouse is located along Boundary Road, near Route 934, north of Indiantown Gap Military Cemetery.

2 P.M. FRIDAY >> This is the first day of the weekend encampment and Civil War reenactment battles of the Civil War to be held at Union Canal Tunnel Park, behind the Lebanon Valley Mall. On Friday, visitors are welcome to observe the camp taking shape as tents are erected, campfires built and meals cooked. On Saturday, the first skirmish between the North and the South will take place at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the battle is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. On Saturday evening, visitors are invited to take a "Candlelight Walk" through the camp after dark.. Candles are available for a small donation or you may bring a flashlight. The walk begins at 7:30 p.m., with last entry at 8:45 p.m. Admission is a donation of a non-perishable food item, to be given to a local food bank, or $2 per car.

7 P.M. FRIDAY >> The rock band "BasicLuther" from Harrisburg will be at Legends Cafe, South Ninth Street, doing electric and acoustic numbers. They'll play until 9 p.m. For more information, go to: www.legendscafe.org.

10 A.M. SATURDAY >> The Governor Dick Environmental Center, Pinch Road, Mt. Gretna, presents "Damsels and Dragons (Flies) to teach about the world of the dragonfly." A short trip will be taken to a local pond to look for dragonflies. Call (717) 964-3808 to pre-register.

11 A.M. SATURDAY >> A Fiesta Latina will be held at the Beautex Park, behind North 12th and Willow streets, Lebanon. The day features Latino food, music, dancing and games for the children. The event is free, and lasts until 3:30 p.m.

7 P.M. SATURDAY >> The "Heritage Festival" featuring Dave Kline and the Mountain Folk will be held in the Tabernacle at Mt. Gretna by the Mt. Gretna Campmeeting Association. For more information, contact Robin at (717) 964-1372.

7 A.M. SUNDAY >> If you're looking for a HUGE yard sale, this is the day to drive to Cornerstone Baptist Church at 80 Brubaker Valley Road in Lititz. The yard sale and accompanying chicken barbecue will help to support Troop 0316 of Trail Life USA. This event will last until 2 p.m.

NOON, SUNDAY >> The 18th Annual Lebanon Classic Car Show will be held until 4 p.m. on Cumberland Street in downtown Lebanon. Rain date will be Sunday, Aug.30.

1:30 P.M. SUNDAY >> An afternoon of Broadway tunes and classic music will fill the Allen Theatre, 36 East Main St., Annville, for the Ellen Cummings Kuhnert Benefit Concert. Proceeds will go to help offset medical costs not covered by insurance. Tickets are available at the theatre or call (717) 304-2000.

3 P.M. SUNDAY >> Virtuoso pianist William Hume of Carlisle will present a concert in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Sixth and Chestnut streets. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Proceeds benefit the Harmonia Student Scholarship Fund. Hume is a concert soloist and chamber musician who has performed at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and on National Public Radio.

5 P.M. SUNDAY >> Come on out to the Quentin Tavern for a night of music with "Shea and Swish," two members of the "Luv Gods," as they perform acoustic songs and ballads. The guys will be playing until 8 p.m. The tavern is located at 81 W. Main St. For more information, call 272-4700.

6 P.M. SUNDAY >> The Millcreek Community Group presents "Music in the Park" at Memorial Park in Newmanstown. Chub Doster and Hard Times will be the featured entertainment. This is a free event, a free-will offering will be taken. Refreshments on sale at 5 p.m. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in Living Stones Church, East Main Street.

7 P.M. SUNDAY >> There's something special about a family that makes music together. The McKameys of Clinton, Tenn., have been performing together for years, and have won a number of Gospel music awards. This Sunday, you can listen to some of the best Gospel music around at "Music in the Park," at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater in Coleman's Park. Remember to bring your favorite lawn chair. 6:30 P.M. MONDAY, AUG. 24 >> The Lebanon Community Concert Band will perform at the Stoneridge Retirement Community, Poplar Run Campus, the Theater on Main, at 440 East Lincoln Ave., Myerstown. The concert is free and open to the public.

10 A.M., WEDNESDAY, AUG. 26 >> Turn off the TV - and the computer - and take the kids outside for a "Hands On Nature" program presented by the Governor Dick Environmental Center. This is nature immersion at its best for children ages 2 to 6. The cost is $5 per child. The environmental center is located at 3283 Pinch Road in Mt. 6:30 P.M., MONDAY, AUG. 31 >> Looking for something different to do? How about learning how to save seeds and prepare for next season's garden? The Richland Community Library will present "Seed Saving 101" at 6:30 p.m. in the library with Joanne Ranck-Dirks, the Heirloom Seed Project Coordinator for the Landis Valley Farm Museum. 10 A.M. SAT., SEPT. 12 >> The Historic Schaefferstown Harvest Fair will usher out the summer and welcome fall at the Alexander Schaeffer Farm at 213 S. Carpenter St. in Schaefferstown. The Harvest Fair will continue on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5, with children under 12, free. Enjoy craftsmen demonstrating 18th century work, bake oven cooking, making cider, horse and farming demonstrations, and sawmill and blacksmith demonstrations. Guided tours of the Schaeffer house and garden are always a highlight. Wagon rides and games are on hand for the kids, and there will be music from that time period.
