Sip Into Summer wine and beer fest to raise money for St. Rose of Lima School

It might seem unusual, but to Colleen Brown it made a lot of sense.

The St. Rose of Lima School, where three of her children attend, needed to raise money, and after batting around a few ideas for fundraisers, settled on a wine and beer festival to be held on school grounds in the 100 block of North Biesecker Road near Thomasville.

"A couple of parents were concerned about it," Brown said. "But for the most part, everybody seems to be OK with it."

Last year's event was a success, attracting 300 people for the afternoon wine and beer festival, called Sip Into Summer. This year, Brown said, she is hoping for more. As an attraction, wine and beer seem to work.

For Brown, a wine enthusiast, it provides an opportunity to try new libations, while raising money for a worthy cause. It also provides local vineyards and breweries a chance to expose people to their products and provide samples.

"It's win-win," Brown said.

The event is from noon to 5 p.m. May 9, and designated driver tickets are available. A local band, The Akt, an acoustic trio who won first place at March's YorVoice competition, will provide entertainment.

The wineries and breweries that will provide samples include Allegro Winery, Naylor Wines, Wyndridge Farm, Crystal Ball Brewing, Moon Dancer Vineyards and Winery, Juniata Valley Wines, Evolution Craft Brewing, High Rock Wineries, the Vineyard of Hershey and others.

Tickets are $25, ($10 for designated drivers) and can be obtained by calling the school at 717-792-0889 or by visiting stroseoflimayork.org.
